Roof Ventilation

A roof space needs air moving through it. Without enough ventilation, warm, moist air from the house can condense on cold timbers and underlay, which is sometimes mistaken for a leak. We fit tile, ridge, eaves and roof-void ventilation to pitched roofs.

  • Tile vents set into the roof slope
  • Ridge vents along the top of the roof
  • Eaves ventilation at the roof edge
  • Roof-void ventilation to move air through the loft

Finding the Cause

  • Condensation tends to appear as droplets across the underside of the felt, damp patches spread widely, or black mould on timbers, often worst in cold weather.
  • A leak tends to be in one place, follows rain, and often lines up with a fault outside.
  • Insulation pushed into the eaves can block airflow; non-breathable felt and sealed loft spaces can make condensation worse.
  • Moisture sources in the house, such as bathrooms without extraction, also play a part.

How the Work Is Done

  • Tile vents replace standard tiles to let air in or out of the roof space.
  • Ridge vents or a vented dry ridge system let air escape along the top of the roof.
  • Eaves ventilation lets air in at the roof edge, kept clear of the insulation.
  • Ventilation work is planned to suit how the roof is built and insulated.

Repair or Replace?

Ventilation can often be added to an existing roof. Where the felt or covering is being replaced anyway, ventilation is best designed in at the same time.

Workmanship Cover & Materials

Workmanship cover is assessed for each job. We do not advertise one fixed guarantee period for all repairs or installations. Ask what cover, if any, applies to the proposed work; any agreed terms, duration and exclusions should be confirmed in writing. Manufacturer warranties are separate and depend on the selected product and its conditions.

Our £1,000,000 public liability insurance covers accidental damage or injury to others; it is not a warranty on the work.

Common Questions

Will Ventilation Cure the Damp in My Loft?

Ventilation can reduce condensation in the roof space, but it cannot fix every damp problem. Leaks, plumbing and moisture from the house need dealing with separately.

How Do I Know It Is Condensation and Not a Leak?

Condensation is usually widespread and worst in cold weather; a leak is usually local and follows rain. We look for both before recommending work.

Can Loft Insulation Cause Condensation?

Insulation packed into the eaves can block the airflow a roof needs. Keeping eaves gaps clear is part of good ventilation.
