Pitched & Slate Roofing
Pitched roofs are made of several layers that work together: the covering of tiles or slate, the battens they hang on, the underlay beneath and the roof timbers. We work on all of them, on concrete, clay and Marley Modern/interlocking tiles and natural slate.
- Concrete and clay plain tiles
- Marley Modern and other interlocking tiles
- Natural slate
- Ridges, hips and dry ridge systems
- Underlay, battens, timbers and eaves trays
Finding the Cause
- Concrete tiles are heavy and robust; clay tiles weather well but can flake or crack with age; slate is thin and long-lasting but fixings can fail.
- Interlocking tiles cover large areas quickly but suit only certain roof pitches.
- Mortar-bedded ridges and hips can crack and loosen; dry ridge systems use mechanical fixings instead of mortar.
- Sagging or torn underlay and soft battens are often found when tiles are lifted.
How the Work Is Done
- Tiles and slates are replaced to match the existing covering where possible.
- Ridges and hips are rebedded in mortar or converted to a dry ridge system.
- Underlay and battens are renewed locally or across the roof, depending on condition.
- Damaged roof timbers are repaired before re-covering.
Repair or Replace?
Isolated slipped tiles, slates or loose ridges are repairs. If many fixings have failed, the underlay is worn throughout, or the covering is past its working life, re-roofing is usually more cost-effective than ongoing repairs.

Workmanship Cover & Materials
Workmanship cover is assessed for each job. We do not advertise one fixed guarantee period for all repairs or installations. Ask what cover, if any, applies to the proposed work; any agreed terms, duration and exclusions should be confirmed in writing. Manufacturer warranties are separate and depend on the selected product and its conditions.
Our £1,000,000 public liability insurance covers accidental damage or injury to others; it is not a warranty on the work.
Common Questions
What Is a Dry Ridge?
A ridge fixed mechanically with clips and seals instead of mortar, so there is no mortar to crack and wash out.
Can Interlocking Tiles Go on Any Roof?
No. They suit certain pitches only, so we check your roof before recommending them.
Why Do Slates Slip?
Slates can slip because a slate is damaged or its fixings have failed. We assess whether the slate is suitable for refixing or needs replacing.
Do You Replace the Battens and Underlay?
Yes, locally during repairs or across the whole roof when re-roofing.
