Leaking Roof or Gutter? What to Check Safely

Practical first steps when you spot a roof or gutter problem, and how to describe it so the right repair can be arranged. For emergencies, call 07360 183936 at any time.

Urgent Signs

  • Water coming through a ceiling or down a wall during or after rain.
  • Tiles, slates or ridge pieces on the ground or visibly displaced.
  • Guttering hanging loose, pulled away or pouring water onto walls.
  • Debris or damage after a storm.

Any of these justify a phone call straight away. Emergency call-outs are available 24/7; urgent attendance is subject to availability, weather and safe access, and may incur a fee depending on the circumstances — ask us to confirm any charge before booking.

Stay Safe

Stay off the roof — do not climb up to look, even from a ladder. Keep people clear of loose materials below the roof edge, and move belongings away from water only if it is safe to do so. Keep clear of water near electrical fittings and seek qualified help.

What Photos & Details to Send

Take photos from safe ground level, or from a safe position indoors without leaning out. Include the area concerned, any displaced materials, and where water is showing inside. Note your town, when the problem started, and whether it follows rain. You can attach photos yourself to an email or WhatsApp message — our quote form prepares the email for you to send.

Gutter Leak, Overflow or Downpipe?

  • Dripping at one point usually means a failed joint seal or a cracked section.
  • Overflowing along a run usually means a blockage, or a run that has lost its fall.
  • Water at the bottom of a downpipe, or a downpipe that backs up, points to a downpipe blockage or damage.
  • Water behind the gutter can mean the gutter has dropped away from the fascia.

Repair or Replacement?

Local damage on a sound roof is normally a repair. Widespread tile failure, worn underlay or repeated leaks in different places can make replacement better value. We assess the roof and explain the reasons either way; the choice is yours.
